As many of you already know, 2010-2011 marked the final year for the Braun-Spleit family teaching strings for the HWDSB. Over the past 40 years our family has so enjoyed getting to know your children, helping them to learn to play their very challenging instruments, and making and performing such beautiful and difficult music together. We are constanstly amazed by how much kids are able to achieve! Thank you to all our past students and their families for their support of the talented young musicians in our community and our wonderful program.

Bel Canto Strings Academy
Though the Spleit family will not be teaching for the HWDSB in September, they do have new projects underway! I invite you to please check out the Bel Canto website at and consider registering your child to join this new and exciting program for September! We have lots of exciting plans in motion, including our recent purchase of brand new instruments; 3+ concert opportunities, including a massed event with other local ensembles; participation in a local music festival or competition; social events like board game nights & movie nights and pizza parties; adult classes; a Glee Club; and summer music camps! And the registration cost is equal to the HWDSB.

What's the Difference?
The main difference between the HWDSB program and Bel Canto is the scheduling. Bel Canto will provide weekly class lessons and weekly orchestra rehearsals on two separate weeknight evenings, outside of school time so that your child does not have classtime or nutrition breaks interrupted nor have to deal with the hassle of carrying (and forgetting!) instrument+supplies to school each week. And with no Saturday rehearsals, your weekends can be your own! Our schedule is already posted on the website so that you can plan for fall in advance instead of waiting for last minute info in September. We will be holding at least 3 concerts over the year, including one massed event (like the Hamilton Place Festival of Strings, which the HWDSB will no longer be hosting due to budgeting). Plus we have all those exciting plans for social events and new instruments as listed in the paragraph above!

Registration
Bel Canto Registration forms can be downloaded online from the website and you can return this to me directly in person, or via postage mail. If you are unable to print at home and would like a registration form for Bel Canto, please let me know so that I mail you a paper copy.

Summer Camp
Whatever choice you make for September, you are still invited to attend the Bel Canto Music Camp in July! Campers participate in 3 daily music lessons (either violin/viola/cello/bass or VOICE if you have any non-strings playing friends!) and perform in a free concert at the end of the week for our friends and families. Each day, campers participate in a broad range of activities, including arts and crafts, games, sports, walking trips to Victoria park for lunch and outside play time, drama and comedy skits! Each week we learn and perform different music, so campers are welcome to attend for more than one session to double their fun!
